Description:
Few eras in operatic history are as storied as the Georg Solti years at Covent Garden, where an abundance of vocal and dramatic talent—both imported and cultivated—helped bring his interpretive brilliance to life. In this performance, Ludmila Dvorakova gives an Isolde that is equal parts glamor and grit, while Jess Thomas, deep into his Heldentenor prime, finds surprising moments of softness amid the thunder. The supporting cast is equally distinguished, with Donald McIntyre as a commanding Kurwenal, Josephine Veasey as a haunting Brangäne, and David Ward a noble and affecting King Marke.
The sound is unfortunately problematic throughout. Drop-outs required some patching from earlier performances, with the most significant repair coming at the start of Act III. The final 45 minutes suffer from distortion and clipping, remnants of which are still audible during climaxes. That said, for those willing to listen past the flaws, a remarkable performance awaits.
