Description:
At a time when it was common to import Italian singers for Verdi operas, it is commendable that Covent Garden chose to feature homegrown baritone Peter Glossop in the title role of Nabucco. Glossop proves that Italians do not have a monopoly on sublime legato singing and ringing high notes, delivering a performance of remarkable skill and artistry.
Elena Souliotis was slightly past her prime by 1972, and her voice lacks some of the heft and beauty of her earlier years. Nevertheless, she handles Verdi’s most demanding soprano role with admirable skill and conviction. David Ward offers a majestic Zaccaria, and Colin Davis brings energy and vitality to Verdi’s score, ensuring a spirited performance.
The sound quality is muffled but adequate.
