Margarete Klose, while more Germanic in approach than Italianate, navigates Amneris’s daunting vocal lines with astonishing ease and authority. A young Christa Ludwig adds a touch of prestige in the brief role of the Priestess. Max Lorenz, though past his prime, powers through Radamès with two very different vocal colors—both delivered at full volume. It may not be subtle, but surviving the role is a feat in itself.
