Description:
Contemporary tastes seem to favor mezzo-sopranos as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. While there is a good argument that an earthier tone lends itself better to this character, Roberta Peters makes an equally good counter-argument that a dazzling soprano in this role can really add an extra element of excitement. As a bonus, she even interpolates “O luce di quest’anima” into the lesson scene. While the interpolation may not perfectly align with the action, opera allows for the occasional moment of pure vocal brilliance. Frank Guarrera is in sublime voice in the title role, his voice effortlessly capturing the charm and charisma of Figaro.
