As Donna Anna, Anna Tomowa-Sintow offers dramatic soprano heft without any of the edge, while Peter Schreier delivers an impeccably sung and moving Ottavio. Otmar Suitner takes a decidedly Romantic approach to the score, breathing naturally with the singers in a way that enhances both vocalism and textual expression. There is a hiss throughout the recording, and Kay Griffel’s Donna Elvira suffers from a lack of preparation in the role.
