Description
Before Maria Callas‘s iconic portrayal of Medea in the 1950s, Luigi Cherubini was not a major focus for opera enthusiasts. That makes it all the more remarkable that Thomas Beecham not only revived this work but also presents a compelling case for its brilliance. Unlike Medea, this is a comedy, and Cherubini infuses the music with the comedic energy one would expect, while showcasing his forward-thinking harmonic and orchestral creativity. Janine Micheau brings opulence and charm to the role of Constance. Earlier versions in circulation were slightly sharp, but I have adjusted the pitch.
