Description:
When approaching any performance conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch, it’s best to set aside expectations and embrace the unexpected. His musical style is deeply rooted in the text and notes, free from the idiosyncratic mannerisms that make some conductors instantly recognizable. For instance, while one might anticipate a leisurely pace based on his Parsifal, this Tristan surprises with a brisk and dramatically charged prelude, setting an urgent tone from the outset.
Helena Braun, though showing some vocal wear, fully commits to the character, delivering a portrayal that is both raw and deeply moving. Günther Treptow’s burly tenor matches her intensity while navigating the vocal demands with slightly greater ease. Margarete Klose brings warmth to Brangäne, and Ferdinand Frantz offers a heartbreakingly poignant portrayal of Marke. The sound is excellent.
