Description:
In 1961 Giuseppe Di Stefano was at his best, particularly in the dramatic repertoire. Although there are slight traces of strain (which would become exacerbated throughout the 1960s) his assent to the top of his voice is thrilling. Irma González‘s career was centered mostly in Mexico City, but her artistry was anything but provincial. As Maddalena, she brings a purity of tone that will not buckle under the vocal demands of this part. A 20-year-old Plácido Domingo gets some valuable stage time as L’incredibile and L’abate. The sound lacks dynamic range.
